The costumes explore the idea of blurring the line between past and present that is presented throughout the play. The idea was to tap into the concept that the forces of oppression that are affecting the characters are not unique to the time they were living in, but are cyclical and recurring throughout history. Further tapping into this vocabulary, the costumes attempt to answer the question of who has power and agency based on the time they are dressed for. The clothes of the past can indicate a loss of agency or an exemption from guilt, while a character wearing contemporary garb can signal stepping into one’s power or acquiring an air of culpability. Each individual character has their own trajectory of power and agency throughout the story that is reflected in their transition between time periods. In practice, the transition from one costume to another would be an onstage action, in order to show the stripping away or taking on the next stage in the evolution of their indentity. The costumes explore the idea of blurring the line between past and present that is presented throughout the play.
