LIGHTING DESIGN
Lighting: Text
The lighting for Little Row Boat is as much about creating comfort as it is about cracking expectation. Kirsten crafted this magnificent idea of conjecture to allow for movement between what is known and unknown, and that grey middle space holds the meat of our story. I wanted to emphasize the environments our characters are living in - which ranges from a garden to a bedroom to a kitchen - while never fully giving in to reality. At times a shift may snap up during a rewind, or a scene shift trails behind while movement plays out. By manipulating color and angle through the many-layered canvas our scenic designer Emma provided, I was able to form a list of lighting rules which eventually snap under the weight of unknown outcomes and dynamics multiplying through "rewind" scenes. Our return to Monticello, in particular, severs Sally and our stage from her previous life. The scenic design loses the upstage flats on the journey, and our characters can no longer flit through those lanes and pass into audience view, or hide behind a sheer curtain to listen to the onstage conversation. The world is, in essence, laid bare to both the characters and to the audience.
